Raleigh Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month

Skunk Trapping
Trapping Raleigh skunks can be a tricky business for a first-time trapper. However, if you follow these few simple rules, you will find skunk trapping easier than you could have imagined. Skunks that that break inside homes will most often do that at night. Skunks are, normally, more energetic during the night, and this is the time when they will look for food. If a skunk fails to get food with hunting and picking up plants, vegetables or fruit, it just might happen that the creature senses the smell of food coming from your home. The source of it might be the crops from your garden, the trash in your backyard, or even your North Carolina farm animals, in case you keep them. One way or another, it could happen that a skunk breaks into your home. It could inhabit your shed or underneath your porch.

It could even climb on top of your house and get to your roof, depending on the type of terrain you live in. Skunks are normally poor climbers, but in the case of need and when the opportunity presents itself, they will manage to climb where they find necessary. A Raleigh skunk might even get inside your basement. Using small cracked window openings or vents as an entry, the animal just might get underneath your home. What you need to know, in order to trap skunks successfully, is that they usually come out at night to search for food. Also, it is not necessary or recommended that you kill a skunk after you trap it. Unlike many other North Carolina animal pests, skunks are as friendly as a wild animal can be. This means that they can’t cause any serious injuries, and the chance of them spreading life-threatening diseases is minimal. Skunks are also an important part of the ecosystem and are not overpopulated like many other animal pest species. This means that, if you are a type of person who is sensitive to animals, there is good news. Trapping a live skunk and releasing it properly is, in this case, a good idea.

The best type of trap to use on Raleigh skunks, by far, is a racoon-sized cage trap. You shouldn't really experiment with other types of traps. Using any other form of trap might hurt the animal unnecessary because there is no reason to hurt the skunk you are trapping. Sadly, many reverts to using death-grip and similar cruel types of traps on raccoons, which is cruel, unnecessary and risky for the homeowner themselves. If you decide to use any other type of trap that is supposed to contain the animal by gripping onto its neck or paw, you are not only hurting the animal. You could also another person's pet or even your own pet. Also, you could accidentally step inside the trap yourself which, strangely enough, happens quite often. A properly chosen cage trap is, by far, the best solution for trapping and relocating North Carolina skunks from your home or building.
